Universal's smash spy spoof Johnny English grossed $3.9m from 2,679 sites in 29 countries over the weekend, raising its international running total to $98.6m.

Holding firm in second place in the UK behind X2, Johnny English took $1.1m from 418 sites in its fifth week, dropping 41% from last weekend.

The film has grossed $26.9m in the UK, passing American Pie 2 to become Universal's 11th biggest release of all time there.

Johnny finished third in Germany, adding $747,000 from 707 sites after a 58% drop for $18m in its fifth week.

In the fifth week of other European runs, the film finished second in the Netherlands, grossing $235,000 from 112 sites for $3.4m; seventh in Spain, adding $225,000 from 227 sites for $5.8m; and fifth in Austria, where it took $92,000 from 86 theatres for $2.7m.

A lacklustre opening in Argentina last Thursday (May 8) produced $18,000 from 20 theatres for eighth place.

Mexico fared better, adding $124,000 from 119 sites in its fifth week for a $2.1m running total.

In Australia, Johnny added $209,000 from 194 sites, dropping 44% but raising its running score in its fifth week to $6.9m.

In South-East Asia the comedy finished fourth in its third week in Taiwan, where it has grossed $278,000 to date.

Johnny grossed $29,000 from 50 theatres in Thailand, finishing third in its fourth week and raising its total there to $956,000.

The film has another 10 territories left to open, including Indonesia on May 21 and Japan in Oct 4.

Meanwhile the drama 8 Mile raised its international cumulative total to $110.3m over the weekend. It opens in Venezuela on May 14 and Japan on May 24.

The distributor opened the romantic comedy Maid In Manhattan in Japan, where it finished fifth on $274,716 from 170 sites. It was the second biggest territory opening for star Jennifer Lopez but fell below the distributor's expectations.

The Pianist continued its strong run in Australia, where it finished eighth in its 10th week, adding $56,000 from 45 sites for a $2.2m total.
