The UK's Metro Tartan has acquired Don Boyd's Liverpool-set gangster film My Kingdom, starring Richard Harris and Lynn Redgrave.

The film, one of the last backed by the now-defunct Sky Pictures, is a modern interpretation of the King Lear story, transposed to the criminal underworld of Liverpool, where the film was shot on location. Producers are Close Grip Films' Neal Weisman and Primary Pictures' Gabriela Bacher.

"I am thrilled that My Kingdom's release in the UK will be masterminded by Metro Tartan," said Boyd. "They are proving that sensitive distribution and commercial success are both possible."

"We are always searching for that rare beast, a quality British film for adults, so I'm extremely pleased about releasing My Kingdom," said Metro Tartan's managing director Hamish McAlpine.

The film will be released in the UK later this year through Metro Tartan Distribution.
