A24 is moving ahead with its sci-fi horror The Backrooms starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, with production commencing in Canada this summer.
Director and effects artist Kane Parsons will direct the feature from his viral found footage YouTube series of the same name that A24 said has drawn more than 190 million views. At the age of 19, Parsons will become the youngest director to work with A24.
Chernin Entertainment, which is part of The North Road Company, will co-finance The Backrooms alongside A24 and plot details remain under wraps. The production partners are A24, Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment.
Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine are producing for 21 Laps Entertainment and Chris Ferguson for Oddfellows Pictures. James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster, with Judson Scott serving as executive producer and Alayna Glasthal overseeing for the company. Roberto Patino is also a producer.
Chris White brought the project to Atomic Monster and will also serve as executive producer.
