British actor Julian Sands has been reported missing after failing to return from a hike last week in southern California.
Sands, 65, who is known for his roles in A Room With A View and Warlock, was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel mountains on Friday, which has experienced very bad weather in recent weeks.
In a statement shared with the PA news agency, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department said Sands was reported missing at about 19:30 local time on Friday 13 January.
Teams have been searching for him since the weekend but avalanche risks and trail conditions meant ground crews were pulled off the mountain on Saturday evening.
“However, we continue to search by helicopter and drones when the weather permits,” the statement said.
Police added that ground searches would be scheduled when the weather improved and conditions were safer for rescue crews.
Sands has lived in Los Angeles since 2020 and recently appeared in the drama Benediction, which also starred Peter Capaldi. His other credits include The Killing Fields, Leaving Las Vegas, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, Smallville, Dario Argento’s The Phantom Of The Opera and Warlock.
The Baldy Bowl, about 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles just below the Mount Baldy ski area, is a popular destination for skiers, climbers and hikers.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has issued an advisory warning that severe winter weather, following weeks of storms that dumped torrential rain and heavy snow across California, has made the area dangerous for outdoor recreation.
