Alexander Payne and cast on ’Somewhere Out There’

Production on Searchlight Pictures’ Alexander Payne Danish-language comedy drama Somewhere Out There is ramping up for a February start, with Jacob Haugaard, Jacob Lohmann, Ole Sorensen, and Lane Lind joining the cast alongside previously announced Oscar-nominated Sentimental Value star Renate Reinsve.

Based on a screenplay by Erlend Loe from an idea by Åke Sandgren, the film takes place in a small provincial town in western Denmark where the bond between longtime friends Lars and Klaus fractures late in life.

Birgitte Skov is producing Somewhere Out There for Scanbox Productions and Searchlight Pictures will handle worldwide distribution excluding Nordic territories, where Scanbox will distribute.

“It’s not a surprise, but I’ve been extremely impressed by the extraordinary quality of Danish actors,” said Payne. “Casting director Djamila Hansen has helped me craft what I think is a terrific ensemble.”

Somewhere Out There marks the first time Payne has directed a feature film in Europe and one not in the English-language. The project reunites the filmmaker with Searchlight Pictures following Sideways and The Descendants.

A co-production between Norway’s Hummelfilm and Sweden’s Nordic Drama Queens, the film is backed by the Danish Film Institute, the Western Danish Film Fund, the Norwegian Film Institute, the Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, DR and SVT.

Haugaard rose to national fame in the 1980s as writer and star of the Jut-nuts comedy films. Sorensen is known for the 2014 feature The Sunfish and leading roles in Frelle Petersen’s 2022 regional dramas Forever and last year’s Home Sweet Home.

Lohmann was most recently in last year’s Dynastiet Mærsk. His credits include the title role in the 2023-25 series Oxen, as well as That Time Of Year, Shorta, and Fathers And Mothers.

Lind’s credits include Take Care last year, Chorus Girls in 2023, and the 1980 series Matador.

Norwegian actress Reinsve broke out internationally with her Cannes best actress-winning role in Joachim Trier’s 2021 feature The Worst Person In The World. She has been nominated for best lead actress at the Oscars for Trier’s 2025 follow-up Sentimental Value, for which she won the European Actress Award.
