The world premiere of UK feature The Face Of Horror, Anna Biller’s follow-up to 2016’s The Love Witch, and the North American premiere of Duncan Jones’s comic book adaptation Rogue Trooper are among 10 late-night screenings in TIFF Midnight Madness.

The Face Of Horror stars Kristine Froseth in the story of a medieval ghost who seeks revenge on her husband and marks Biller’s first feature in a decade. Jones’s 2000AD adaptation and closing night selection Rogue Trooper premiered in Annecy and follows a genetically-engineered super solider behind enemy lines, with a voice cast that includes Aneurin Barnard, Sean Bean, and Hayley Atwell.

Six world premieres selected by Peter Kuplowsky and his team include US filmmaker Joshua Giuliano’s opening night film River in which siblings stranded on a boat are stalked by a killer; Canadian filmmaker Matthew Rankin’s gonzo documentary Ladies And Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney about the former Canadian prime minister; and Nick Kozakis’s Australian horror Kick On, which follows a night of drug-taking at the lair of a crime lord’s son.

Malayalam-language vampire feature Half hails from Indian director Samjad, while Eugene Kotlyarenko brings his Japan-set road trip action comedy Vintage Violence.

Japanese filmmaker Sabu’s comedy Arrested Memory, which world-premieres in Venice, receives its North American premiere and centres on a detective with amnesia. Receiving their international premieres are Matt Barats’ Anchors Aweigh, a comedy about a jilted man who reflects on life in a small boat rental; and Paolo Strippoli’s Venice-bound Italian mystery about a mother’s lie.

The late-night crowd at Toronto’s allegedly haunted Royal Alexandra Theatre will get the chance to see a special screening of Na Hong-jin’s Cannes sci-fi action thriller Hope on the eve of the festival on September 9, and a “return to where it all started” screening of Curry Barker’s box office smash Obsession on September 11, one year after Focus Feature acquired the film in a bidding war.

Barker and star Inde Navarrette will separately take part in an on-stage TIFF: The Market conversation in the Dialogues strand.
