EXCLUSIVE: 2-Metertainment has acquired Japan theatrical rights to animated feature My Grandfather Is A Nihonjin, which had its world premiere at last year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Celia Catunda’s hand-drawn feature will have its theatrical release in Japan on August 7. The deal was struck with Brazilian producer Pingium Content.
Based on Oscar Nakasato’s novel Nihonjin, the film follows Noboru, a 10-year-old Brazilian boy who - like its author - is of Japanese descent. When his grandfather Hideo reluctantly opens up about his past, a powerful family narrative unfolds, bridging generations and cultures across time and continents.
The film is produced by Kiko Mistrorigo and Ricardo Rozzino for Pinguim Content, with a screenplay by Rita Catunda. Its visuals are inspired by the works of Brazilian-Japanese contemporary artist Oscar Oiwa.
“My Grandfather is a Nihonjin is a touching story in the form of a beautiful hand-drawn animation,” said Makoto Tsumita of 2-Metertainment. “We want Japanese and Brazilians living here in the present to come to watch the film on a big screen, because this is a part of our country’s untold history. Most of all, this film is perfect for anyone who is looking for an answer to those important questions: where do I come from? What am I? Where am I going?”
Gebeka has scheduled a theatrical release in France for September 16. Gold Valley Films International handles sales excluding Brazil and Japan.
