Anthony Hopkins, Charlotte Rampling

Anthony Hopkins and Charlotte Rampling are to star in The Species, a period drama from The Other Boleyn Girl filmmaker Justin Chadwick, with Hanway launching sales at the American Film Market (AFM).

Hopkins plays Victorian biologist Charles Darwin, while Charlotte Rampling will star as his wife Emma. Tom Hollander and Billy Howle are also joining the cast.

Emma finds herself as a widow on a late life journey of self-discovery as she faces a challenge to her faith in the form of her beloved atheist husband’s as-yet unpublished autobiography.

Production is scheduled to begin in June 2026 in Northern Ireland. The US producers are Christian Taylor of Lane Productions, who originated and developed the project, along with Mary Aloe of Aloe Entertainment and Joshua Harris of Peachtree Media Group. UTA Independent Talent Group reps domestic sales.

UK filmmaker Chadwick’s further credits include Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. He said of the project: “Charlotte and Anthony are nuanced and skilled actors at the heart of a film that deals unflinchingly with love, grief and death and a deep relationship that transcends space and time.”
