Iranian-born, France-based filmmaker Ashgar Farhadi will receive the honorary heart of Sarajevo at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival (August 14-21).
Farhadi will accept the award in person, with a retrospective of his work also being presented as part of the festival’s Tribute To programme.
The director previously served as jury president for the festival’s feature film competition back in 2018. His film Everybody Knows also screened in the Open Air programme.
Festival director Jovan Marjanovic said: “It is difficult to overstate Asghar Farhadi’s significance to world cinema. His remarkable body of work reminds us that the most profound dramas are often concealed within everyday life.
”His films do not offer easy answers; instead, they invite us to look more closely, listen more carefully and engage with life’s complexities.”
Farhadi’s most recent film, Parallel Tales, premiered in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Previous recipients of the honorary heart of Sarajevo include Emily Watson, Willem Dafoe and Stellan Skarsgard.
