Markus Schleinzer’s Rose has been picked by Austria’s selection committee as its submission for best international feature film for the 2027 Academy Awards.
Sandra Hüller stars in the 17th-century drama, set in the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War, as an enigmatic soldier who returns to a secluded German village and claims to be the heir of a long-abandoned farmstead, all the while pretending to be a man.
The film premiered at the Berlinale, where Hüller won the Silver Bear for best leading performance for her role.
The Match Factory is handling worldwide sales on the film, whilst Mubi owns all rights in North America, UK, Ireland, Italy, Turkey, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand.
Schleinzer has previously collaborated with Jessica Hausner, Ulrich Seidl and Michael Haneke, including on the casting for The White Ribbon. His previous two films as a director were Michael (2011) and Angelo (2018).
Austria has been nominated four times in the international feature category, winning twice for Stefan Ruzowitzky’s The Counterfeiters in 2007 and Michael Haneke’s Amour in 2012.
