Baftas

The Bafta Film Awards has unveiled the longlists for films in all of the major categories following the first round of voting by the organisation’s 6,700 eligible voting members.

Bafta has brought in many changes to the voting procedures this year following an in-depth investigation into membership and voting this summer prompted by last year’s nominations which were widely considered to be lacking in gender, ethnic and national diversity.

The key changes introduced on the back of the industry-wide investigation included encouraging all voters to watch at least 15 prescribed films, chapter voting until final nominee stage in all four acting categories and the best director categories, and more juries across all categories apart from best film.

The final nominations will be announced on March 9, and the Bafta Film Awards will take place on April 11.

Key changes

Four acting categories

In Round One, a new acting chapter of eligible members voted for a longlist of 12; the final three places have been chosen by a diverse longlisting jury, understood to be of around 12 industry professionals, from the next 10 voted for by the chapter (placed 13-22).

New this year is the rule that actors cannot be longlisted more than once in a category.

Round Two will now see a new jury choose the five nominees in each category to be announced on March 9. In Round Three, all eligible voters watch and will vote for the winner in each category.

Best director

In Round one, the director chapter has voted for the top 20. The top eight male and top eight female directors have gone straight to the longlist. The same longlisting jury as in the acting categories has then selected the final four directors from the next 10 in each list – two from the female directors ranked nine-18, and two from the male directors ranked nine-18.

In Round Two, a different jury will now choose the final six nominees (up from five nominees) to be announced on March 9. In Round Three, all eligible voters will watch and vote for the winner from the six nominees.

Outstanding British Film

In Round One, an opt-in chapter of all eligible voters ranked their top 20 films. The top 20 of these have automatically made the longlist and the top five of these (which are not disclosed) go straight through to final nominations stage.

Now in Round Two, an expert jury will debate which five of the remaining 15 will be added to a 10-title strong nomination list.

All voters will choose the winner from the 10 nominees.
