Black Bear has acquired worldwide rights to Laika’s live-action adaptation of the space thriller novel Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and has set Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to write and direct.
Set against the backdrop of NASA’s Space Shuttle programme in the 1980s, Atmosphere follows brilliant young astronaut Joan and her best friend and fellow astronaut Vanessa who get caught up in a catastrophe.
Boden and Fleck, whose credits include Captain Marvel and Half Nelson, adapted the novel. The film is a Laika production in association with Circle M+P. Laika head Travis Knight, Matt Levin and Jeremy Kipp Walker are producing alongside Boden and Fleck, Reid, and Brad Mendelsohn of Circle M+P. Laika’s Maryse Knight and Zac Locke are executive producers.
Black Bear will distribute the feature theatrically in the US and directly in its territories, co-finances with Laika, and represents international sales.
Black Bear recently released Daniel Roher’s 2025 Telluride drama Tuner with Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. The pipeline includes Sundance selection Wicker starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgard on October 23, David Leitch’s Jason Statham Stole My Bike, starring Statham and Hannah Waddingham; and Julia Cox’s A Woman In The Sun with Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek.
Laika’s live-action slate includes the thriller Seventeen based on the thriller by John Brownlow; Crumble, which Brian Duffield wrote and directed and is produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller; and Lulu Wang’s Audition starring Lucy Liu and Charles Melton. The division is expanding into television with Exit Party based on the upcoming novel by Emily St. John Mandel.
