Black Bear has announced the third film on its US distribution slate since launching three months ago and will release the Jason Statham action thriller Shelter on January 30, 2026.
Sales head John Friedberg and his team took the project to the Cannes market in 2024 when Baltasar Kormakur was attached as director before he dropped out and was replaced by Ric Roman Waugh.
Statham plays Mason, a recluse who sets off a violent chain of events when he rescues a drowning girl and is forced to confront his past. The cast includes Bodhi Rae Breathnach from Hamnet, Naomi Ackie, and Bill Nighy. Ward Parry wrote the screenplay.
Black Bear produced Shelter, alongside Punch Palace Pictures, CineMachine, and Stampede Ventures. Statham serves as producer with Friedberg, Brendon Boyea, Greg Silverman, and Jon Berg.
Executive producers include Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Michael Heimler, Andrew Golov, and Mike Shanks, as well as Waugh, Rachael Cole, Volodymyr Artemenko, Yevgen Stupka, Macdara Kelleher, Victor Hadida, Gideon Yu, and Elizabeth A. Bell.
Black Bear took on US distribution to its boxing drama and TIFF premiere Christy starring Sdyney Sweeney and will release that film on November 7. It has also taken on another of its films, Daniel Roher’s drama Tuner starring Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall that premiered in Telluride and will open in 2026.
