EXCLUSIVE: Picturehouse Entertainment will release Cristian Mungiu’s Cannes Competition family drama Fjord, starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, in UK-Ireland.

The film was picked up from Neon, who will release in the US. Goodfellas handles international sales.

It marks the first feature with an international cast for the Romanian filmmaker, who won the Palme d’Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days in 2007.

A Romanian father and Norwegian mother move with their children to a remote Norwegian village. They bond with the neighbours, however when the family is suspected of disturbing behaviour they become the focus of scrutiny.

Fjord is produced by Mobra Films (Romania), Why Not Productions (France), and Eye Eye Pictures (Norway).

This is the second Picturehouse acquisition of a Neon and Goodfellas Competition title, following Hirokazu Koreeda’s Sheep In The Box.

“This is an incredibly exciting film – Cristian Mungiu is one the greatest directors working today,” said Sara Frain, managing director of Picturehouse Entertainment. ”His unique cinematic vision, combined with this talented international cast, makes Fjord a highly anticipated film. The premiere in Cannes will undoubtedly elevate that excitement. We look forward to collaborating with the filmmakers, Neon and Goodfellas on the UK release.”
