‘The Last One For The Road’

EXCLUSIVE: Music Box Films has acquired US rights to Francesco Sossai’s debut feature The Last One For The Road which world premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard before screening at Toronto, New York and Busan film festivals.

Paris-based sales outfit Lucky Number is handling international sales on the title which has already sold to multiple territories including Bulldog Film Distribution for the UK-Ireland.

The Last One For The Road centres on two broke, bar-hopping fiftysomethings who meet a shy and aimless architecture student and together embark on a chaotic road trip through the Italian countryside.

The film is produced by Marta Donzelli and Gregorio Paonessa for Italy’s Vivo film with Rai Cinema, Philipp Kreuzer for Germany’s Maze Pictures, and Cecilia Trautvetter.

The film has taken €1.2m at the Italian box office so far since its late September release by Lucky Red.

Vivo film’s Marta Donzelli and Gregorio Paonessa said: “As independent producers, we like to think that its success proves audiences still want to go to the cinema and be surprised. It’s a reminder of how vital it is to keep supporting young filmmakers and works that explore new creative directions.”

Brian Andreotti, head of acquisitions at Music Box Films, said: “Sossai’s affectionate portrait of two middle-aged rascals shifts almost imperceptibly from wry human comedy to gorgeous Venetian travelogue to pocket dissertation on the vicissitudes of post-industrial Italy. We can’t wait to unleash this stealth crowd-pleaser on the backroads of America.”

Music Box Films is planning a theatrical release in 2026.

Previous deals for the film include France (New Story), Benelux (Imagine), Canada (Ritual Films), Spain (La Aventure), Portugal (Risi Films), Greece (Danaos), Russia and CIS (UniverCom), Baltics (A-One Baltics), Brazil (Belas Artes) and ex-Yugoslavia (Demiurg).
