EXCLUSIVE: Louise Bagnall’s animated feature Julián has sold to key territories ahead of its world premiere next month at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The film has set distribution Canada (Elevation Pictures), UK (Elysian Films), Ireland (Wildcard Distribution), Denmark (Angel Films), Sweden (Folkets Bio), Norway (Arthaus), Poland (Young Horizons) and Benelux (Periscoop, Le Parc and JEF). Discussions are underway for Spain.
Julián is a 2D computer animation title adapted by Juliany Tavernas from Jessica Love’s 2018 book Julián Is A Mermaid. The film follows a wide-eyed young boy named Julián, who is about to spent the summer with a grandmother he barely knows. He is amazed to discover her treasure-trove apartment, his own Caribbean heritage and the lively Brooklyn community; and most surprisingly of all, that he is a mermaid.
The film is produced by Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, the studio behind titles such as Song Of The Sea and Wolfwalkers, with Canada’s Aircraft Pictures, Luxembourg’s Melusine Productions and Denmark’s Sun Creature. It is executive produced by Zoe Saldana, Cisely Saldana and Mariel Saldana for Cinestar Pictures.
The film will launch out of competition at Annecy in June. The film is a feature directorial debut for Irish animator Bagnall, who is Cartoon Saloon creative director and has worked in animation roles across the firm’s slate.
