‘ChaO’

EXCLUSIVE: Japanese filmmaker Yasuhiro Aoki’s animation ChaO has signed a bevy of deals to multiple territories after winning the jury award at last year’s International Animation Film Festival in Annecy.

The film is set in a near-future Shanghai where humans and mermaids co-exist. It is about a lowly shipping company employee whose routine life is disrupted when he is offered the chance to marry a mermaid princess named ChaO.

Brussels-based Best Friend Forever and Japan’s Studio4ºc studio, which are co-repping the film, have sold it to Germany, Austria & Switzerland (Wild Bunch Germany), Italy (Dynit), the UK (Anime Limited), CIS (Inoekino), Czech Republic and Slovakia (Zero Gravity), Spain and Portugal (Jonu Media), Latin America (Cinetopia), Taiwan (Catchplay), South Korea (Media Castle), Thailand (Dream Express), India (PVR), and the Middle East (Front Row Filmed Entertainment).

Previously announced deals include GKIDS for North American Distribution and Eurozoom for France. Toei released the film in Japan last summer.
