South Korean conglomerate CJ Group’s China affiliate has announced it will open a 4DX cinema in Chongqing this Saturday (Sept 28).

This will be CJ’s fifth 4DX cinema in China after the ones in Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, and Harbin.

However, it will be the first time they partner not with exhibitor affiliate CJ CGV, but with a local cinema chain - Chongqing UME. (As of the end of August, CGV had opened its 20th site in China.)

Chongqing UME has eight theatres in Chongqing and reportedly takes 60% of the city’s box office profits.

Developed by CJ, 4DX uses specially equipped seats that move and vibrate in sync with films to give 4D effects that also include motion, wind, scents and fog.

CJ states it plans to open a total of 300 4DX screens around the globe by 2015. So far it has 4D in countries such as Brazil, Japan, South Korea and Russia.
