‘The Battle of Hedgehogs’

Four films from Croatia, Kosovo, Portugal and Turkey have been selected for San Sebastian’s WIP Europa lineup, which runs September 21-22.

WIP Europa showcases films at post-production stage that are majority European. The four films are The Battle of Hedgehogs by Turkey’s M. Tayfur Aydin; In a Manner of Speaking by Kosovar filmmaker Val Jashari; Familiar Feelings by Portuguese director Mónica Lima; and The First Week of August by Croatian filmmaker Filip Mojzes by Filip Mojzes.

Aydin’s fourth feature film, The Battle Of Hedgehogs chronicles the explosion of family conflicts over an inheritance in an Anatolian village. Ayadi’s most recent non-fiction film Far Away was selected for Tallinn Black Nights.

Jashari’s debut feature In A Manner of Speaking follows a man accused of murder in the USA, who has been hiding in Pristina for three years. Jashari won best film and director at the University of California Los Angeles film school’s UCLA Spotlight Festival with The Evans Girl, her graduation film.

Lima’s first feature film Familiar Feelings tells the story of an unsuccessful actress’ eventful return to her childhood home. Lima is a graduate in film studies at the FAMU in Prague and the DFFB in Berlin. Her 2023 short Human Nature won the Ammodo Tiger Short Award at Rotterdam Festival and was nominated for the European Short Film Audience Award 2024/2025.

Mojzes’s debut The First Week of August narrates the descent into chaos of an apparently model upper-middle-class family following a violent incident. Mojzes has a master’s degree from the Béla Tarr Film Factory in Sarajevo and has made several short films.

The four films will compete for the WIP Europa Industry Award, which assists with post-production and offers distribution in Spain, and the WIP Europa Award, worth €10,000 for the main production company of the film winning the WIP Europa Industry Award.
