EXCLUSIVE: Dark Star Pictures arrives at AFM with sci-fi horror Our Effed Up World directed by frequent Australian collaborator Alice Maio Mackay, with I Saw The TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun joining as producer as principal photography gets underway in Australia.

The story centres on Sheri, a woman grieving the loss of her grandmother when a mysterious entity crash-lands in the woods near her home. Suddenly Sheri and her friends become the first line of defence against an insatiable intergalactic hunger.

Sara Thompson (One Of Us Is Lying) stars alongside Jess McLeod (It’s a Wonderful Knife), Annapurna Sriram, Scott Major, Karis Oka, and Jordan Dulieu. The film will also feature voice cameos from Tommy Dorfman and Jack Haven.

Dark Star represents worldwide rights and will be talking to buyers about the entire Mackay library. It most recently produced Mackay’s The Serpent’s Skin, which is currently playing the festival circuit ahead of a planned theatrical release in early 2026.

Dark Star has released all of Mackay’s features since Bad Girl Boogey in 2022 and the catalogue includes T Blockers, Satranic Panic, and Carnage For Christmas.

“I’m thrilled to continue my collaboration with Dark Star Pictures, whose support has allowed me to keep evolving and experimenting as a filmmaker,” Mackay said. “With Our Effed Up World, I’m diving into a new sub-genre that I can’t wait to share with audiences.”

“Alice has built one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary genre filmmaking,” Dark Star Pictures president Michael Repsch said. “We’ve been proud to grow alongside her and continue supporting her vision as she pushes into new territory with Our Effed Up World.”
