EXCLUSIVE: Dark Star Pictures has acquired US rights from Filmoption International to 2025 Fantasia Film Festival premiere Lucid and will distribute theatrically and digitally this year.

Deanna Milligan and Ramsey Fendall directed the story of Mia, an art student on the verge of being expelled from school whose last hope for combating her creative block is a magical lucid dreaming elixir.

Awakening her creativity, the potion also unleashes dark monsters within her subconscious, one of which is her mother who appears as a hairy monster that Mia is forced to confront.

Lucid shot in 35 mm and Super 8 in Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, and was made possible through the support of Telefilm Canada and Creative BC. Caitlin Acken Taylor, Georgia Acken, Amber Dandelion, and John Luna star alongside Vivian Vanderpuss, who also designed the hair monster costume.

The trippy art-punk film received its European premiere at Sitges and debuted in the US at Brooklyn Horror. It opens in Canada on opens theatrically in Canada through Filmoption on May 29.

Lucid is exactly the kind of daring, genre-bending filmmaking we love championing at Dark Star – it’s visually hypnotic, emotionally raw, and unapologetically weird in all the right ways,” Dark Star president Michael Repsch said.

Anne-Julie Lalande, distribution & sales manager at Filmoption, said of Dark Star: “This distributor has consistently demonstrated their commitment to championing innovative independent cinema with genuine passion and expertise.”

Emanuel Foucault served as producer and Peter Phok from Pearl is executive producer.
