‘Marry Poppins Returns’, ‘The Favourite’

Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins Returns and Olivia Colman for The Favourite will vie for the lead actress prize in the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards after nominations were announced on Wednesday (12).

The British stars’ Oscar aspirations received a big boost with the announcement, given that actors comprise a large part of the Academy voting membership. Blunt and Colman will compete with Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born, Glenn Close for The Wife, and Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me? There was no room for Maggie Gyllenhaal for The Kindergarten Teacher or Nicole Kidman for Destroyer.

Regina King was the chief surprise omission of the day in the supporting actress category for If Beale Street Could Talk, as Margot Robbie’s awards season launched with a nomination for Mary Queen Of Scots. Kidman was also left out for Boy Erased in a category sees nominations for Amy Adams for Vice, Blunt again for A Quiet Place, and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz for The Favourite.

Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born and Christian Bale for Vice are nominated in the lead actor category, with Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody, Viggo Mortensen for Green Book, and John David Washington the surprise nominee for BlacKkKlansman. Willem Dafoe for At Eternity’s Gate, Hugh Jackman for The Front Runner, and Ryan Gosling for First Man all missed out.

The supporting actor category brings recognition for Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Sam Elliott in A Star Is Born, Mahershala Ali for Green Book, Timothée Chalamet for Beautiful Boy, and Adam Driver for BlacKkKlansman.

The film ensemble cast nominees are A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians.

In the TV categories, Hugh Grant is among the TV movie or limited series actor nominees for A Very English Scandal alongside Anthony Hopkins for King Lear, and Sandra Oh is in contention for actress in a drama series for Killing Eve.

The 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on January 27 in Los Angeles.
