
Filming has begun in Australia on Fawzia Mirza’s romantic comedy Written In The Stars, starring Menik Gooneratne, Nikesh Patel and Saagar Shaikh.
Based on Su Dharmapala’s bestselling novel The Wedding Season and adapted for the screen by Gooneratne, the film is set within Melbourne’s Sri Lankan community.
Shot in and around Melbourne, the production is set to generate more than $2.7m (AUD$4m) for the Victoria economy and create an estimated 300 jobs for local crew, local cast and extras, according to government agency VicScreen.
Locations include Keilor, Keilor East, Pascoe Vale, East Melbourne, South Melbourne and Melbourne CBD.
Gooneratne – known for Apple TV series Pluribus and 2018 film Mortal Engines – plays a woman who turns to Vedic astrology and horoscope matching in the hopes of finding her true love.
The cast is further led by Patel of UK sitcom Starstruck and Prime thriller The Devil’s Hour alongside Shaikh from Deli Boys and Ms Marvel.
Canadian filmmaker Mirza previously directed comedy drama The Queen Of My Dreams, which premiered at Toronto in 2023, and episodes of Hulu series Deli Boys.
The Australia-Canada co-production is produced by Leanne Tonkes, Melissa Russo and Jenni Tosi for Sense & Centsability; Andria Wilson Mirza for Baby Daal Productions; and Marc Tetreault and Jason Levangie for Shut Up & Colour Pictures. International sales are handled by Los Angeles-based Blue Fox Entertainment.
Production investment from came from Screen Australia in association with Telefilm Canada and it is financed in association with VicScreen. Local distribution will be handled by Maslow Entertainment in Australia and Mongrel Media in Canada.
