Film4 has appointed Mubi’s Cate Kane as senior commissioning executive.
She will join the UK film funder in January 2026 and will report to director of Film4 Farhana Bhula.
Kane has been co-head of global acquisitions at Mubi since 2020, acquiring titles including Aftersun, The Substance and My Father’s Shadow. Prior to this, she was head of acquisitions at Curzon Film for nine years, leading on films including Parasite, 45 Years and Force Majeure.
She will help shape the slate of the Channel 4 in-house feature film division, partnering closely with filmmakers to shepherd projects from early development through to production. Film4 currently has an annual budget of £20m.
Film4’s slate includes four directorial debuts that will world premiere at Sundance next month: Molly Manners’ Extra Geography, Rafael Manuel’s Filipiñana, Olive Nwoso’s Lady and Joanna Natasegara’s The Disciple.
Further projects on the slate include Alice Birch’s Sweetsick starring Cate Blanchett, Jonathan Schey’s Everybody Wants To F*ck Me starring Taron Egerton, Andrew Haigh’s A Long Winter and Bijan Sheibani’s The Arrival.
Kane joins Film4 following the promotion of Bhula from head of creative to director of Film4 earlier this year. There are currently no plans to recruit a direct replacement for the head of creative role. Bhula has taken over in the top job from Ollie Madden, who is now head of UK film at Netflix. Kane will work alongside fellow senior commissioning executive David Kimbangi.
Kane has also previously worked at BBC Film, Casarotto Ramsay and Content Film.
“Having collaborated with Film4 for many years, I’m over the moon to now join Farhana’s brilliant team and help build on their extraordinary slate,” said Kane. “Film4 has always been the creative home for filmmakers that have inspired me and I can’t wait to champion both established and emerging voices for audiences everywhere.”
“Cate is an exceptional creative force whose instincts, track record, and vision perfectly align with the next chapter of Film4,” added Bhula. “She has proven to be fearless in backing some of the most exciting new voices from the UK and is deeply committed to championing work that resonates with global audiences.”
