EXCLUSIVE: Films Boutique has taken on international sales rights to French filmmaker Jean-Baptiste Durand’s The Man Who Was Afraid Of Women starring Alexis Manenti and Nadia Tereszkiewicz and will start teasing the project to buyers in Toronto. Diaphana will distribute the film in France.
The offbeat romantic drama about a man living in the south of France who is paralysed around women he likes is actor/director Durand’s second feature following acclaimed debut Junkyard Dog (Chien De La Casse), which won best first film at France’s César Awards and Lumiere Awards in 2024.
Co-written with Nathan Le Graciet and Guillaume Breaud, Durand reteams with his Junkyard Dog producer Anaïs Bertrand of Insolence Productions for the project, which begins a six-week shoot in France’s southern Hérault region on October 2.
Manenti, who won a César for most promising actor in Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables in 2020, will star alongside Tereszkiewicz, who was named most promising actress at the César Awards in 2023 for Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s Forever Young.
Films Boutique heads to Toronto with Rubaiyat Hossain’s supernatural feminist drama The Difficult Bride and Manuel Wetscher’s Eklipse – both fresh off Venice premieres and playing in TIFF’s Centrepiece strand – and Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s Soumsoum, The Night Of The Stars, which Chad has selected as its Oscar submission.
