‘Flee’

Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, has unveiled the shortlist for the best features section in its 2021 edition, which will take place in-person and online from November 10-18, 2021.

Among the shortlisted titles is Flee, which Denmark has submitted for the best international Oscar category. The Jonas Poher Rasmussen directed film has already won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema - Documentary competition at Sundance. It focuses on an Afghan refugee as he makes a major personal revelation, using animation to enhance the story.

Music documentaries The Velvet Underground – a Cannes title from Todd Haynes about the influential 1960s New York avant grade rock group – and Questlove’s Sundance title Summer Of Soul (…Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), about a 1969 festival nicknamed ‘Black Woodstock’, have also been shortlisted.

The shortlist is overseen by artistic director Thom Powers in consultation with the festival’s programming team. Titles will vie for awards in four categories: directing, producing, cinematography and editing. The awards will be selected by a three-person jury, filmmakers Nadia Hallgren, Kimberly Reed and Hao Wu.

Last year’s winners were Time (directing), Welcome To Chechnya (producing), Boys State (editing), and 76 Days (cinematography).

The festival will run a main line-up of 127 features and 125 short films. For eight of the last nine years, Doc NYC has screened the documentary feature that went on to win the best documentary Oscar, until last year when the festival did not screen Netflix’s My Octopus Teacher.
