Giorgio Gosetti

Giorgio Gosetti, the founder and original director of Venice’s Giornate degli Autori sidebar, has died suddenly at the age of 70.

News of his death was announced by Italian news agency ANSA, where Gosetti also worked for many years as a journalist, and by the Venice Biennale.

Gosetti worked closely with the Venice Film Festival in the 1980s and 1990s during the artistic directorships of Carlo Lizzani, Gian Luigi Rondi and Gillo Pontecorvo.

In 2004, he founded and directed Giornate degli Autori as an independent sidebar at Venice. Gosetti was also a former co-director of the Rome Film Festival, and served for a time as director of Italy’s film promotional agency Italia Cinema.

In a statement, the Venice Biennale – parent organisation of the Venice Film Festival – said: “His passing leaves a great void in the festival community, in Italian film culture, and in all those who have had the opportunity to know and appreciate his professionalism, his wisdom, his kind and human ways.”

ANSA said Italian and European cinema would mourn Gosetti’s sudden passing after writing his last article for ANSA last night. “There’s only one word to associate with him: cinema,” said ANSA.
