‘Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!’

Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has acquired worldwide rights to buzzy Sundance title Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!.

The deal marks the first acquisition from the dramatic narrative competition sections, and is SPC’s first buy of the festival.

Inspired by filmmaker Josef Kubota Wladyka’s mother Ha-Chan, Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty! follows Haru and Luis who love competing in Tokyo’s ballroom dance scene.

After tragedy strikes and Haru withdraws into isolation, her friends coax her back to the studio; where she develops an infatuation with the new instructor.

Written by Wladyka and Nicholas Huynh and shot in Tokyo, the film stars Rinko Kikuchi, Alberto Guerra, Alejandro Edda, Yoh Yoshida and Damian Alcazar. Producers are Kimberly Parker Zox, Mao Nagakura and Wladyka.

CAA handles sales on the film, which debuted in the US dramatic competition at Sundance on Thursday, January 22.

It is a third feature for US director Wladyka, after 2014’s Dirty Hands and 2021’s Catch The Fair One.
