Tessa Ross’ London-based House Productions and BBC Film have joined Justine Triet’s psychological thriller Fonda, which starts shooting in the southwest of France this month.

Screen has confirmed the French production will also shoot for a few days in the English countryside, overseen by the UK partners. BBC Film has boarded as a financier.

In France, Screen understands further backing is coming from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and the Landes Department.

Cast

Fonda has also added Odessa A’zion, Ewan Mitchell, Cherry Jones and Benedict Wong to its cast, alongside the previously announced Mia Goth, Allison Janney, Andrew Scott, Frank Dillane and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.

The film is French filmmaker Triet’s full English-language debut.

Shooting is scheduled from April to June. According to the production, Fonda is a “psychological thriller set in a seemingly idyllic huis clos [closed space].”

Written and to be directed by Triet, Fonda reunites the filmmaker with her Anatomy Of A Fall producers Marie-Ange Luciani of Les Films de Pierre, and David Thion of Les Films Pelléas.

Belgium’s Les Films du Fleuve is co-producing.

Mk2 Films is handling international sales, as well as co-producing and providing finance. Finland- and UK-based investment fund IPR.VC is also backing the film.

Studiocanal will distribute Fonda in territories including France, Germany, Italy, Benelux, Poland, Australia and New Zealand, but not the UK-Ireland.

Triet’s Anatomy Of A Fall won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2023.
