‘Funk’

EXCLUSIVE: Italian sales agent Intramovies has acquired global rights to leading Brazilian director Aly Muritiba’s new film Funk.

Funk charts the rise of MC Sabrina, a young Brazilian funk singer, from her beginnings in Morro dos Prazeres to the electrifying favela parties that pulse through the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

The film is produced by Manoel Rangel, Egisto Betti and Heitor Dhalia for Paranoïd Filmes and co-produced by Laranjeiras Filmes and Claro Vídeo. The story is written by Fernando Barcellos, Leandro Saraiva and Aly Muritiba.

The film is at post-production stage and will be distributed in Latin America by Paris Filmes. It stars Duda Santos as Sabrina, Lellê, Kibba and MC Nem as part of an ensemble cast that blends professional actors with real-life funk DJs, singers, and producers.

Muritiba’s films include 2018’s Rust which played in World Cinematic Dramatic Competition at Sundance, and he has directed series for HBO, Globo, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. His short The Factory was shortlisted for the Oscars in 2013, and Private Desert was Brazil’s 2022 Oscar contender having premiered in Venice’s Giornate Degli Autori section.

Director of photography for Funk is the Peruvian-Chiliean Inti Briones (The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future, Too Late to Die Young). Joining the project as assistant director is Sabothati (Thatiane Almeida).

Geremia Biagiotti, Intramovies’ sales, marketing and acquisitions manager said: “Funk is a rollercoaster ride through the heights of Rio de Janeiro, revealing a brighter, unrepresented side of the favelas, where vibrant parties and a pulsating music culture fuse into a raw, electrifying, and unapologetically free subculture. We’re thrilled to reunite with Aly Muritiba after our powerful collaboration on Private Desert, and proud to support his bold cinematic vision on this exciting new journey.”
