EXCLUSIVE: The avant-garde artist known as the Polka Dot Queen died in August

EXCLUSIVE: Japan’s Free Stone Productions is relaunching a documentary about artist Yayoi Kusama, following her death in August.
The film, titled Yayoi Kusama: I Adore Myself, was originally released in 2008 and played festivals including New York’s Japan Cuts, where it won the audience award.
Directed by Takako Matsumoto, the documentary follows the avant-garde artist known as the Polka Dot Queen as she worked on a large series of drawing and made cameo appearances on TV shows, revealing her eccentricities, self-obsession and dedication to her art. She died on August 14 aged 97.
Free Stone secured rights to the film last week from Matsumoto’s Pike Production after receiving several inquiries from international buyers seeking documentaries about the artist. The Japanese sales agent is showcasing the film as part of its slate at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM).
The documentary, which is produced by Seiji Itaki and Takashi Shimizu, received a re-release in Japan on October 2.
