EXCLUSIVE: Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher will star in writer-director Rocky Rodriguez Jr.’s UK comedy-drama Waif, which will begin principal photography in London on October 19.
Helen Foster and Ryan Prescott co-star in the film as a free-wheeling single mother and a drifting art curator who are making a life on their own terms amid the skateparks, guitar shops and art openings of east London.
Flemyng is producing the film with Foster for Sandalphon Arts, the company she runs with Rodriguez Jr.
Notable heads of department include cinematographer Shane F. Kelly, whose credits include Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, Everybody Wants Some!, and Hit Man.
Waif is Rodriguez Jr.’s third feature, after 2017’s Dog Years and 2025’s Siblings.
“Waif asks whether responsibility must mean conformity,” said Rodriguez. Jr. “Whether a person can grow without surrendering the spirit that first made them shine.”
Flemyng and Fletcher previously starred together in Guy Ritchie’s 1998 crime comedy Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which took £11.8m at the UK-Ireland box office.
