A New York state judge has ordered that Harvey Weinstein be extradited to Los Angeles, where he faces 11 counts of sexual assault.

Lawyers for the disgraced former Hollywood mogul, currently serving 23 years in New York state for third degree rape and first degree sexual assault, had delayed the extradition several times.

However on Tuesday (June 15) Erie County judge Kenneth Case ruled the extradition will proceed, despite an argument by defence lawyers that their client might not get the medical treatment he needs in a Los Angeles jail while awaiting trial.

Weinstein is staying at Wende Correctional Facility in Erie County in New York state where he is receiving treatment.

The defence also claimed an error in due process in the part of the prosecution.

Prosecutors said there were no technical errors in their paperwork and said Weinstein would be able to find suitable medical attention in Los Angeles before the trial.

They added Los Angeles officials are likely to extradite Weinstein either later this month or in the first half of July.
