EXCLUSIVE: South Korea’s K-Movie Entertainment has landed sales rights to upcoming comedy Mad Dance Office and supernatural horror Yeong Deok: A Haunted Eatery, bolstering its EFM slate of titles.
Mad Dance Office stars award-winning actress Yeom Hye-ran, most recently seen in Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice and who also leads Chung Ji-young’s My Name, which will world premiere at the Berlinale in the Forum section.
Yeom plays Kuk-hee, a by-the-book district office civil servant who has lived a flawless, tightly scheduled life. With a promotion imminent and her daughter’s future secured, everything is going according to plan – until it all unravels. Her promotion is taken, her daughter disappears, and an unexpected emptiness sets in. Searching for balance once more, Kuk-hee ends up in the last place she ever expected: a flamenco dance studio.
The cast also includes Choi Seung-eun of Netflix feature My Name Is Loh Kiwan and Arin from K-pop group Oh My Girl whose acting credits include Urban Myths and series S Line.
Produced by Contents Creative Group Moon, it marks the feature debut of director Jo Hyun-jin. A local theatrical release is scheduled for March 4 through D-Station.
K-Movie will also introduce international buyers to Yeong Deok: A Haunted Eatery by Ku Tae-jin, who previously directed 2024 horror-thriller Spring Garden and was a producer on 2021 horror and box office hit The Medium.
The film is set at one of Korea’s three most haunted locations, Yeongdeok Raw Fish Restaurant, which has gained worldwide notoriety through viral videos. The story follows a crime video analyst who is hired to prove the footage was staged after the owner claims YouTubers fabricated a haunting. While every trick is exposed, one final video defies explanation, revealing the shadow of something inhuman. When the YouTuber who filmed it disappears, the investigation leads to a chilling truth.
The cast is led by Hong Ko Joon of Disney+ series Big Bet and The Oulaws, and Kim Nam-joo, a member of girl group Apink. By4m Studio will handle distribution and is known for box office successes such as The Firefighters. Now in post-production, a release is anticipated this year.
The film expands K-Movie’s EFM slate of upcoming titles, which also includes psychological thriller The Eyes, a Korean remake of Spanish thriller Julia’s Eyes. K-Movie is known for handling blockbuster franchise The Roundup, starring Don Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok).
