Laura Poitras

US filmmaker Laura Poitras will be the special guest at the 24th edition of the industry sidebar to Visions du Reel (VdR), the documentary festival in Nyon, Switzerland.

The Oscar-winning documentarian is set to attend the opening of VdR-Industry on April 19 where she will present a conversation while her latest film Cover-Up will screen in the official selection.

“Laura Poitras has been able to shine a light on so many deeply moving, often unsettling and always timely issues of our times,” said Sabine Fayoux Cantillo, head of industry at VdR.

“She has done so with tact, sensitivity, artistry and a point of view that is unmistakably hers. Her work has been quintessential in shaping our shared understanding of the world, grounded in profound political awareness.”

Poitras was nominated for her first Oscar in 2007 with My Country, My Country for best documentary feature. She swept awards season in 2015 for her Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour and was nominated again in 2022 for All The Beauty And The Bloodshed which also won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival.

Her latest film Cover-Up, centres on acclaimed US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh. It is nominated for a Bafta in the best documentary film category.

Last month, the festival announced that fellow US filmmaker Kelly Reichardt is to be the guest of honour at the festival. The full programme will be unveiled on March 25.
