EXCLUSIVE: Screen can exclusively reveal the first trailer for Andrei Kutsila’s Letters From The Silenced Country, a documentary about individuals living under the autocratic regime in Belarus.
The film had its world premiere in the out-of-competition Venice Open section at Venice film festival in September, where it received the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary. It will next play in the international competition at DOK Leipzig, before playing IDFA in November.
The film follows three individuals who have endured imprisonment, repression and exile by the Belarusian state: a father hiding from surveillance to avoid arrest and separation from his daughter; a former criminal investigator who leaves the system; and a student sentenced for protesting.
Czech Republic-based Filmotor handles world sales. The film is produced by Miroslaw Dembinski for Poland’s DocEdu Foundation, Gregor Streiber and Friedemann Hottenbacher for Germany’s Inselfilm produktion, and Giedre Zickyte for Lithuania’s Moonmakers.
It is a fourth feature-length documentary from Kutsila, a Belarusian filmmaker who lives in exile in Poland. Previous titles include 2021 Warsaw selection When Flowers Are Not Silent.
