
The Italian box office was broadly flat in 2025, supported by a slew of successful local films that compensated for a weaker Hollywood slate.
Gross takings grew 0.5% year on year to €496.6m, while admissions fell 2% with 68.4 million tickets sold, according to figures published today by Italy’s box office organisation Cinetel.
A key factor in achieving the broadly stable performance was the success of Italian productions, which had a market share of 32.7% (€162.4m) of box office revenues - the best result for local films since 2016.

Four of the top 10 films in Italy in 2025 were local productions, led by Checco Zalone’s huge comedy hit Buen Camino - the top-grossing film of the year.
Released theatrically on December 25, Buen Camino grossed €36m in just seven days, with more than 4.4 million admissions, through distributor Medusa The film, about a father who leaves his comfort zone to search for his missing daughter on the Camino de Santiago, was produced by Vuelta-owned Indiana Production.
The three other Italian films to make the top 10 were Perfect Strangers director Paolo Genovese’s latest Madly, which earned €18m through 01 Distribution for third place in the chart; Ferzan Ozpetek’s drama Diamanti in eighth place with €9.8m through Vision Distribution; and ninth-placed comedy I Am The End Of The World by Gennaro Nunziante with €9.7m through Vision.
The success of Italian films offset a weaker than usual performance for US movies. US films accounted for 40.6% of box office revenues (€201.4m), a drop of 24.7% compared with 2024. The top-grossing US release was Lilo & Stitch, which took €22.3m through Walt Disney Italia.
The Italian box office is still down 22% compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, when the gross box office reached €635.4m.
Walt Disney Italia was the top distribution company with total box office revenues of €107.5m and a market share of 21.7%, followed by Eagle Pictures (€60.7m; 12.2%), Warner Bros. Italia (€52.8m; 10.6%), Universal Pictures (€52.4m; 10.6%); Medusa Film (€51.8m; 10.4%); 01 Distribution (€45.6m; 9.2%); Vision Distribution (€31.4m; 6.3%); Lucky Red (€23.9m; 4.8%); Piper Film (€16.6m; 3.3%); and Nexo Digital (€8.1m; 1.6%).
Compared to other European markets, Italy has performed similarly to the UK, which also remained stable in 2025 with 1% growth. The French market has experienced a sharp decline, with admissions down 13.6% compared with 2024. The Spanish market is also down (-5%), while Germany recorded modest growth (+7.3%), according to Cinetel figures.
Italy has 1,366 cinemas and 3,579 screens according to Cinetel figures for 2025.
