The New Zealander recently served as executive producer on the upcoming summer release The Man Of Steel. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on Jan 25. He was 63.
“Lloyd was quite talented in all aspects of filmmaking, which is why he had success both as a creative producer and as a physical line producer,” said his fellow producer on Man Of Steel Chuck Roven, who has made three films with Phillips.
“Our working relationship spanned over 20 years, as did our wonderful, action-packed, sometimes-turbulent-but-never-dull friendship.”
Phillips was born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand. He started out as a photojournalist and studied at the National Film School in England.
He moved to Malibu approximately 30 years ago and served as executive producer, producer or co-producer on Inglorious Basterds, The Legend Of Zorro, The Tourist, Beyond Borders, Vertical Limit, The Edge and Twelve Monkeys, to name a few.
In 1981 he won the best live-action short film Oscar for The Dollar Bottom.
“Lloyd was a true original, loved by anyone who knew him well,” said Angelina Jolie. “He had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of adventure. His death is a terrible shock and a tremendous loss. He was so full of life that it is impossible to believe he is gone.”
“Not only was Lloyd one of my closest friends, he was also one of the best producers I have ever worked with,” said Martin Campbell, director of The Mask of Zorro and Casino Royale. “His dedication and commitment were second to none. I will miss him terribly.”
Phillips is survived by his wife, the producer Beau St Clair, and his sister Avril Tantrum. A memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Inner-City Filmmakers non-profit organisation, based in Santa Monica.
