Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver will star in the New York-set thriller Useful Idiots for Fifth Season and Closer Media, which Black Bear will introduce to AFM buyers next week.
Joseph Cedar (Beaufort, Footnote) will direct and co-wrote the screenplay with 60 Minutes producer Shachar Bar-On about Diane Castle (Streep), a disillusioned luxury property market reporter who may have stumbled onto the story of a lifetime when a record-breaking sale of a new penthouse leads to a mysterious oligarch and corruption.
Closer Media first alluded to a Ceder project in an interview with Screen in Cannes. Fifth Season will finance and produce with Closer Media’s Zhang Xin and Jonathan King, Bruce Cohen, and William Horberg.
Fifth Season CEO Graham Taylor, Christopher Slager, and Dan Guando will serve as executive producers. CAA Media Finance represents US rights.
Streep has won three Oscars, most recently for The Iron Lady in 2012, and is reprising her role as Miranda Priestley in 2026 release The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Weaver received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival and has starred in the Alien and Avatar franchises – Avatar: Fire And Ash opens next month – as well as Working Girl and upcoming 2026 tentpole Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu.
