Mexican actor-filmmaker Diego Luna will receive the honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the upcoming Sarajevo Film Festival (August 14-21).
Ashes, Luna’s latest directorial outing which world premiered at Cannes, will play at Sarajevo. He will also give a masterclass.
Luna first captured international attention with his performance in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mamá También in 2001. In 2025, he starred opposite Jennifer Lopez and Tonatiuh in Bill Condon’s Kiss Of The Spider Woman. He also starred in and executive produced the Disney+ series Andor.
Upcoming work includes starring in Peter Landesman’s thriller Eleven Days and Disney’s live-action adaptation of Tangled.
As a director, his credits include 2007 documentary J.C. Chávez, 2010’s San Sebastian award winner Abel and 2016 Sundance premiere Mr Pig. In 2005, he co-founded Ambulante, a travelling documentary film festival created to foster cultural exchange.
“A quarter of a century ago, Diego Luna won our hearts with his unforgettable performance in Y Tu Mamá También,” said Jovan Marjanović, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival. “We hoped then and know now that we were witnessing the emergence of an artist who would never cease to explore and surprise, moving seamlessly from major Hollywood productions to intimate human stories that reveal the richness of Latin American culture.”
“It’s been many years since I’ve wanted to go to Sarajevo, so many colleagues have spoken beautifully about the festival and their personal experience there. I feel honoured with the recognition of my work and very excited to share Ashes with the audience,” added Luna.
UK actor Emily Watson and Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi will also receive honorary awards at this year’s festival.
