‘Le Faux Soir’

Belgian filmmaker Michaël R. Roskam’s WWII resistance drama Le Faux Soir has been selected as the closing film of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Le Faux Soir will have its European premiere at San Sebastian after world premiering at Toronto. It will screen after festival’s awards ceremony on September 26 in the Kursaal.

Set in occupied Belgium, Le Faux Soir is the story of a group of Resistance fighters who print a fake edition of Le Soir national newspaper, then a propaganda tool of the Nazis, that mocks the occupier. Some historians consider it to be the first ever media hack.

The film stars Arieh Worthalter, Mélanie Thierry, Karim Leklou, Mara Taquin, Bouli Lanners, Julien Frison and François Damiens.

Roksams’s feature debut Bullhead premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin Festival in 2011, earning him an Academy Award nomination for best international film. He won San Sebastian’s best screenplay prize for 2014’s The Drop. His 2017 film Racer and the Jailbird screened in Venice out of competition and was selected to represent Belgium at the Academy Awards.
