EXCLUSIVE: Italy’s Minerva Pictures has acquired international sales rights to Lilian T. Mehrel’s Tribeca selection Honeyjoon.
The comedy drama centres on Persian-Kurdish Lela and her sensual daughter June who take a trip to the romantic Azores after a big loss — with opposite ideas about why they’re there, how to grieve and June’s tiny bikini.
Between honeymooners, Woman Life Freedom, and their hot philosophical-surfer tour guide João, they find each other and come back to life.
Filmed in Portugal’s Azores islands, the film stars Ayden Mayeri (Jackpot!), Amira Casar (Call Me By Your Name) and Jose Condessa (Strange Way Of Life).
Honeyjoon won the seventh annual AT&T Presents: Untold Stories pitch competition, which comes with a $1m prize, at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, and world premiered this summer at the festival.
The movie was developed at the TorinoFilmLab’s ComedyLab and Cine Qua Non Storylines Lab.
The film, which is written and directed by Mehrel, is produced by Andreia Nunes through Portugal’s Wonder Maria Films.
