‘Mr Burton’

Marc Evans’ Mr Burton won the best feature/TV film award at Bafta Cymru 2026, having also received four nominations and two wins in 2025.

Last year, the Marc Evans-directed film about the teacher who inspired Welsh schoolboy Richard Jenkins to one day become Hollywood acting legend Richard Burton received awards in the sound and photography and lighting: fiction categories.

Owing to a lnsufficient entires in the best feature film/TV award category in 2025, the award was paused for last year’s ceremony and entries were rolled over for the 2026 awards. Fellow nominees in this category for 2026 were Madfabulous, The Man In My Basement and Welsh-language opera film Tanau’r Lloer.

Mr Burton, which stars Toby Jones and Harry Lawtey, was also nominated for oustanding British film at the Bafta 2026 film awards in February.

Casting director Lauren Evans, whose credits include I Swear and Sex Education, was awarded the inaugural Bafta Cymru outstanding contribution to craft award.

Further winners at last night’s Newport ceremony (October 4) included Matthew Rhys, who won the actor award for Netflix series The Beast In Me; Gabrielle Creevy in best actress for BBC series The Guest; S4C Welsh-language drama Y Golau: Dwr won two awards, in the TV drama and editing categories; and Gareth Bryn won in the director: fiction section for ITV crime series Karen Pirie.
