Nanni Moretti in ‘A Brighter Tomorrow’

Italian director Nanni Moretti has cast Louis Garrel and Jasmine Trinca in his next film, love story Succederà Questa Notte (It Will Happen Tonight), and is set to start filming this September.

The Palme d’Or winning director has adapted a book of short stories, Legami, by Israeli writer Eshkol Nevo. Moretti previously adapted a Nevo novel for his 2021 film Three Floors. He has collaborated with Federica Pontremoli and Valia Santella on the script. It marks his first feature since suffering a heart attack in April.

“We have intertwined some stories from the book to create a unique story,” said Moretti in an interview with Italian newspaper Il Messaggero. “Without talking about current events, it manages to describe our feelings today, our fears. The difficulties in relationships and our hopes.”

Filming is set to begin on September 1 in Spain, with the bulk of the shoot taking place in Rome. It will also film in Turin.

The feature is a Sacher Film and Fandango production in collaboration with Rai Cinema. Director of photography is Francesco Di Giacomo.

French actor Garrel’s credits range from Bernardo Bertolucci’s 2003 film The Dreamers, through to more recent titles such as Quentin Dupieux’s 2024 Cannes festival opener The Second Act Saint-Exupéry, The Three Musketeers part 1 & 2, The Innocent, Forever Young, Little Women and An Officer And A Spy.

Italian star Trinca previously worked with Moretti on his 2001 Palme d’Or winner The Son’s Room and 2006’s The Caiman. She recently starred in Italian feature Diamanti as well as series The Art Of Joy and Supersex.

The cast also includes Angela Finocchiaro, Elena Lietti, Antonio De Matteo, Andrea Lattanzi, Hippolyte Girardot, Pietro Ragusa and Paolo Sassanelli. Moretti told Il Messaggero he would also play a small part in the film.
