Neon has acquired US rights to pscyhological thriller Mothers’ Instict starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway. 

The film will be a remake of the Belgium feature Duelles by Olivier Masset-Depasse which won a record-breaking nine Magritte awards from the Belgian Academy in 2020 including best film and best director. 

Masset-Depasse will also direct this English-language remake. Principal photography begins May 25 in the US.

Set in the early 1960s, Chastain and Hathaway play best friends and neighbours who live a traditional idyllic lifestyle, both with successful husbands and sons of the same age. But life’s perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond and a psychological battle of wills ensues.

Hathaway and Chastain will serve as producers on the filmKelly Carmichael is joining Chastain as producer under the banner of Chastain’s production company Freckle Films (The Eyes Of Tammy Faye,The 355) which the actress set up in 2016.

Paul Nelson (Under My Skin, Pod Generation) at Mosaic and Jacques-Henri Bronckart (Duelles, The Nun) are also producing.

The film is fully financed by Anton which negotiated the domestic sale alongside CAA Media Finance and will be handling the international rights as well. The project was first unveiled at the 2020 American Film Market.
