Netflix’s big awards push La Bola Negra is to receive an expanded exclusive theatrical run starting with a US platform release on October 16.
The new date is three weeks longer than the initial November 6 release announced in late June, meaning the epic drama will screen exclusively in cinemas for 47 days until it debuts on the service on December 2, which is being brought forward by two days.
Additionally, the streamer has acquired Canadian rights to the film, which earned directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (aka Los Javis) a shared Cannes best director award with Pawel Pawlikowski for Fatherland.
Inspired by an unfinished work by Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, the film explores the interconnected lives of three gay men in 1932, 1937 and 2017.
The cast includes Spanish singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente (Alvaro Lafuente Calvo) in his acting debut and Miguel Bernardeau, and an ensemble featuring Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close.
The film will receive its North American premiere at Toronto next month where Cruz will receive the TIFF Special Tribute Award at the awards gala on September 13.
