Netflix is collaborating with independent Spanish streamer Filmin, striking a deal that will give Netflix subscribers in Spain access to a selection Filmin’s films and documentaries.

Under the one-year deal, Filmin will curate monthly collections of films and will license the Spanish streaming rights to the titles to Netflix.

The first monthly collection, titled October Mysteries, is being made available to Netflix’s Spanish subscribers from today (October 1) in time for Halloween season.

The October titles include Aislinn Clarke’s Irish folklore-inspired horror Fréwaka, David Cronenberg’s Vincent Cassel-starrer The Shrouds and Magnus von Horn’s Cannes competition title The Girl With The Needle.

A new collection of ten titles, licensed and selected by Filmin, will be added to Netflix on the first day of every month, while the previous month’s collection will remain available to stream for one more month.

The move follows Filmin’s acquisition in June of Spanish producer-distributor Elastica in a groundbreaking deal that bolstered its library of titles.

“At a time when the industry is seeking alliances and aggregation, this is the first deal of its kind anywhere in the world between competing VoD platforms. It is highly beneficial for the sector,” Filmin CEO Juan Carlos Tous told Screen, adding: “The partnership is important to us because Netflix has an audience that does not yet know Filmin, and we can introduce them to what we do. It is a win-win.”

For Netflix, the deal could help the streamer reach new audiences with a range of specialist and arthouse titles.

“We deeply admire Filmin’s commitment to film and documentaries. They’ve built a very close relationship with a discerning, specialszed audience, while at Netflix we work every day with the focus of entertaining the world’s largest and most diverse audience. That combination makes us perfect partners: together we can offer our audience even more films and documentaries to enjoy, handpicked by Filmin’s editorial team,” said Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of content for Spain, Portugal and Turkey.
