Netflix’s upcoming Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde starring Ana de Armas has been given an NC-17 rating “for some sexual content”, five weeks after director Andrew Dominik predicted it would in an interview with Screen.
While the certification from the Motion Picture Association means nobody under the age of 17 can watch the film in a cinema it is unlikely to pose a problem to Netflix given that its likely destination would be arthouse cinemas and audiences, should the streamer wish to give it any kind of theatrical release in support of the platform debut.
Speaking to Screen during the Berlinale Dominik forecast the film would get the rating. “It’s a demanding movie — it is what it is, it says what it says,” he said. ”And if the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office.”
While Dominik went on to say Cannes head Thierry Fremaux was a fan of the film, it has since come to light that no Netflix features will premiere on the Croisette.
At time of writing Netflix had not set a debut date or talked about theatrical release plans for the film.
