Kiernan Shipka, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Edgar Ramírez, and Rosemarie DeWitt will star in the AFM psychological thriller Hyena, one of the final feature credits of the late David Lynch, which starts production in Washington state in the first quarter of 2027.
Lynch gets an executive producer credit on the film and WME Independent has come on board to handle US sales alongside international sales agent Upgrade. Oscar-nominated David Lancaster (Whiplash, Nightcrawler) is producing alongside Jeff Elliott (Canary Black).
Scott Coffey will direct Hyena from a screenplay he co-wrote with novelist Blair Mastbaum. Shipka (Longlegs, Industry) plays Genevieve, a young woman who introduces her enigmatic boyfriend Alexei (Woon-A-Tai, A Long Winter, Caught Stealing) to her family.
When Alexei starts to expose her family’s long-buried secrets, desires and hypocrisies, Genevieve must make a sacrifice to save them. Production will take place in Spokane. Archie Madekwe and Havana Rose Liu were previously attached to Hyena.
Ramírez’s credits include Emilia Pérez, Borderlands, and the upcoming second season of HBO series Task. DeWitt has starred in Rachel Getting Married, La La Land, and Cannes entry Diamond.
Coffey appeared as Wilkins in Lynch’s Mulholland Drive. Lynch became a mentor and was closely involved in the early development of Hyena. Coffey said, ”Hyena is a very personal film. I’ve always believed the most unsettling horror isn’t supernatural – it’s the moment grief and love turn feral, when we stop pretending we aren’t wild. Kiernan Shipka, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Edgar Ramírez, and Rosemarie DeWitt will bring extraordinary depth, intelligence, and vulnerability to the movie.”
