Nicolas Winding Refn is teaming with Mubi on his next feature, a contemporary reincarnation of cult horror franchise Maniac Cop.

The film will shoot in Los Angeles in January 2027. Cast and plot are yet to be confirmed.

Mubi is fully financing the film and has taken distribution rights for North America, Latin America, UK-Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. It has committed to a wide theatrical release for the film.

The original Maniac Cop film was released in 1988, directed by William Lustig from a screenplay by Larry Cohen. Winding Refn first acquired rights to the project more than a decade ago; it has since been through different versions, including a possible series, but has now been resurrected as a feature film.

Winding Refn will direct and produce the film through his byNWR Originals banner, and the company’s Christina Erritzoe and Kimberley Willming will take executive producer roles.

The filmmaker has been in Cannes this week with Her Private Hell, his first feature in a decade, which played out of competition on the Croisette.

“The concept has always appealed to me,” said Nicolas Winding Refn. “In today’s political and social climate, the iconography of Maniac Cop alone provokes an immediate, uneasy reaction. I’ve been watching it all unfold while constructing this project in the shadows… waiting. Now, that moment has finally arrived. The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem…”
